ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sat Oct. 22) — Central Washington capped Eagle Asinate Serevi produced three tries Saturday as Central Washington defeated Brigham Young 62-12 in a women’s rugby friendly on CWU’s field. Former Heriman Rugby High School player, Ashlee Byrge operated on the wing, had six conversions for Central Washington, which led 17-0 at halftime.
After a feeling out process between the two teams, CWU got things going when Kathlena Truong found the try zone off a penalty scrum from five meters out. Asinate Serevi gave CWU its second score, receiving an offload from Suiluana A'au and marched into the try zone.
Just three minutes later, A'au got her change, breaking the BYU line and stampeding 45 meters for a try. After an Ashlee Byrge conversion, the Wildcats held a 17-0 first half lead. Serevi and Truong, finished off the scoring the first half with their second tries of the game to give the Wildcats a comfortable 27-0 halftime lead.
Serevi finished off the hat trick six minutes into the second half to push the CWU advantage to 34-0. BYU started to control the ball and was able to break the CWU defense for back to back scores in the 50th and 60th minutes to cut the CWU lead to 34-12, but the Wildcats were not done scoring. In the final 20 minutes of action, the Wildcats scored four more times, and put the game away from within BYU's reach.
Final Score: CWU 62 BYU 12. The Cougars return to action next Saturday when they play host to Dixie State University at home on October 29 at 1:00 p.m. MDT on Helaman Rec Field, BYU.
